Where Should I Register for Wedding Gifts?

So many couples wonder where they are going to register. Don’t worry- it’s easy to decide once you hear these factors.

First of all, where are you going to live? If you’re planning on a pent-house apartment, you probably won’t register at Wal-mart. On the other hand, there is no need to register at Macy’s if you are struggling college students. The point is- don’t register somewhere where you can’t get what will look good in your new place. Also, if you don’t register for the appropriate place, you may not get what you need (in the case of college students) or you may get something you already own (in the case of the well-off couple).

Second of all, where do your guests live? This may seem like a weird question, but it is vital to getting the things you register for. For example, you would not want to register at Kohl’s, if a lot of your guests live in Florida (no Kohl’s in the state). The best idea is to register somewhere that has stores in (nearly) every state, such as Target or Sears. However, if you live in the same state as most of your guests, or if you know there are stores in their state (check online), then feel free to register there. It is also a good idea to register at two or three different places to ensure that your guests will be able to get you something and to ensure that you will be able to register for exactly what you want.

Third of all, there are a couple service related things you need to look into to finally pick the store you want. A couple of them are things like tracking, exchanges, selection, etc. These ”perks” are really important for numerous reasons. For example, some registries don’t take an item off your registry list after it has been purchased- making it easy for you to get doubles. Make sure they have some kind of system to handle that. Also, exchange policies are important in case you still get doubles and need to exchange one after the honeymoon.

Don’t forget, in the end it is all up to you what you choose. If you want to register at Nordstrom because your parents did- go right ahead. Always remember that it is YOUR big day, and you and your fiance are the only ones with a final say in things.
