In all the excitement of planning for your wedding don't forget to take care of the business details by finding out Nashville marriage license requirements. A marriage ceremony can't take place unless a valid marriage license has been issued and you won't be able to apply for it after the ceremony.

When applying for a Tennessee marriage license, some requirements may vary by county. Here are a few requirements that are standard for every county.

  • ID Requirement: Proof of age and Social Security number is required. Bring a valid driver's license, certified birth certificate or valid passport when applying for a Tennessee marriage license.
  • Application: Both parties must appear together to apply for a marriage license at the Howard Office Building, 700 Second Avenue South; Nashville, TN.
  • Residency Requirement: The parties do not have to be a resident of Tennessee
  • If Divorced: When applying for a Tennessee marriage license, bring a copy of Divorce Decree.
  • Fees: A Tennessee marriage license costs $99.50 unless applicants complete a premarital preparation course. If a course is completed, you will receive a $60 credit. The couple must provide a Certificate of Completion form that has been completed and signed by the counselor.
  • Waiting Period: There is no waiting period in Tennessee. License is valid for 30 days and is good for ceremonies performed anywhere in Tennessee.
  • Other Tests: No blood test is required.
  • Under 18: If either applicant is under 18 years of age, he or she must be accompanied by parents. If under 16 years of age, Tennessee law requires the couple receive a court order to marry.
