Wedding Consultant Certifications: What You Should Know

Are there certain designations or wedding consultant certifications I should ask for when interviewing a wedding coordinator?

Lisa Konecny, founder of E-Events Designs in Orlando, FL, advises that, for credibility, a bride and groom should be aware that there are indeed designations for Wedding Planners and other required wedding consultant certifications. One is The Association of Bridal Consultants, which offers a five course program designed to provide a working knowledge of many facets of the wedding business Proficiency tests are offered every three years thereafter, keeping that Wedding Planner on top of their field, as well as the opportunity to further their designations. This is an important wedding consultant certification and shows that the planner is interested in continuing to further their service to the bride.

Elisa Delgardio, owner of A Flair for Affairs in Orlando, FL adds that while many qualified wedding planners and coordinators are not certified by any organization or association, those that have earned the right to use “PBC” (Professional Bridal Consultant), “CWC” (Certified Wedding Consultant) or “CSEP” (Certified Special Events Professional) are often a step ahead.

When interviewing potential consultants, you may want to consider the following:

  1. The wedding coordinator’s level of experience (years in the wedding industry)
  2. The wedding coordinator’s professionalism (a responsible business owner for 3 or more years) in addition to any professional credentials.

Wedding consultant certifications do not necessarily mean a class has to be taken, however. The amount of wedding experience is important as well, and can be just as important as any certifications.

Susan Southerland of JustMarry.com adds that it is very important to ask the coordinators you interview whether or not they continue to study in their field. You want a bridal consultant who is on top of the latest trends and fashions. You don’t want a wedding with 80’s style decor (unless that is your theme!)

Understanding the importance of wedding consultant certifications, and at the very least, the importance of experience and proven success in the wedding industry, will help you find the perfect wedding planner to help you create your perfect day!
