Poems for Wedding Ceremonies – A Few of My Favorites 2

Here is another beautiful poem from Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Perhaps it would be perfect for your ceremony.

IF THOU MUST LOVE ME

If thou must love me, let it be for naught
Except for love’s sake only. Do not say,
‘I love her for her smile – her look – her way
Of speaking gently,- for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day’ -
For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee – and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity’s wiping my cheeks dry:
A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!
But love me for love’s sake, that evermore
Thou mayst love on, through love’s eternity.

Trying to personalize my wedding ceremony was the hardest part. I knew that writing my own vows was out of the question because I knew I would cry like a baby. Instead of doing this, had my fiance and I write eachother letters (neither of us were allowed to see the others’ letter) and a month prior to the wedding we gave them to our pastor to approve. We had him read them during the ceremony! It was awesome, it brought such a personal touch to our wedding! It made everyone laugh and cry, and the parallels each of them had was incredible!
