Throw Back Thursday: The Powder Blue Tuxedo with Ruffled Shirt

Back when I was a little girl, in 1979, my family received an invitation to a very formal wedding for my father’s cousin in London. We were all very excited to go. We spent a lot of time picking out the perfect clothes and getting ready for the trip.

Once we checked into our hotel room, I remember my dad opening his suitcase and pulling out the most beautiful tuxedo. It was light blue with a blue bow tie and a gorgeous ruffled shirt. The ruffles even had powder blue piping on them. I thought he was the most handsome man there.

Well, now that I am not so young, I look at those photos and they make me giggle. I have nothing against powder blue, but wow, there sure was a lot of it in that tuxedo! Check out the photos below and let me know whether or not you think that this is a look that should come back.

If you are planning a retro wedding, I found these tuxedos at pressthatman.com, vintagetuxedorental.com and sazzvintage.com. I am sure they can help you find the perfect tux to complete your look.

If you have comments on this or any other wedding related topic, please leave a post for me here or email me at susan.southerland@pwg.com.

    Your partner in perfect planning,

I bought one of these suits along with another friend around 1980 or so. We wore them for DeMolay as well as other places. The only saving grace to them was the fact the shirts we wore with them had French Cuffs as well as studs. While I still wear a tuxedo a great deal more than other folks, I would not be caught in this relic from the 70's prom scene ever again, and I suggest anyone wanting one should be promptly served with a copy of the black tie guide so they know what proper formal wear should be like. This guide is located at www.blacktieguide.com and is well worth reading!
