Honeymoon Mondays: Florence, Italy
I greatly enjoy my “virtual traveling” every Monday when I blog about honeymoon destinations. There are so many wonderful places for couples to travel! Today’s featured destination of Florence, Italy is regarded by many as the absolutely perfect honeymoon location.
Steeped in romance and history, Florence is one of the most visited cities in all of Europe and is considered among the most beautiful cities in the world. As the oft-recognized birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is also known as the art capital of Italy.
Even couples without an interest in art, however, can appreciate the beauty and culture that this magnificent city has to offer.
Things to Do:
1. Tour the city’s historical center. Contained within medieval walls built in the 14th-century, Florence’s historical center (or “centre”) truly embodies the city’s cultural heritage. Visit this heart of the city to experience more than 600 years of renowned artistic craftsmanship through sites such as Santa Maria del Fiore, the Church of Santa Croce, and the Piazza della Signoria. While there, you can experience the work of great masters such as Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo.
2. Take a romantic stroll in a garden. Among the most popular sites for visitors to Florence is Boboli Gardens. Begun in 1550, the gardens have undergone many transformations over the past centuries. Because this lovely location joins with the equally famous and historic Pitti Palace, honeymooners can enjoy both attractions at the same time.
3. Shop in the Old World. Florence is home to some of the best shopping in Europe. With a number of open-air markets selling food, clothing and antiques, Florence has something to offer any honeymooner. Check out Piazza San Lorenzo, Mercato Nuovo (Porcellino) on Via Porta Rossa and Mercato Centrale, among other options.
4. Sample local dining. Every honeymooner likes to know that there are plenty of delicious food options near their accommodations. In Florence, you can be certain that a wonderful meal is just a quick walk away. Some popular dining options include Trattoria Pallottino near Santa Croce, Enoteca Bar “Fuori Porta” below Piazzale Michelangelo, and Al Lume di Candela near Via Tornabuoni.
