Wedding Ideas: The Season for Wedding Savings

By Perfect Wedding Guide ‘National Wedding Expert’, Susan Southerland

‘Tis the season to be shopping– and saving! Not just on gifts for the holidays, but there’s potential for wedding savings everywhere as well. With Christmas quickly approaching, now’s the time for major craft stores, clothing and home decor retailers alike to begin slashing prices on end-of-season merchandise.

How does that help you, the bride-to-be, you may be asking? There are lots of opportunities to snap up great deals on attire and decor if you’re getting married next year. Look past the kitschy, blatantly holiday themed items on clearance and you may find some great deals on things like:

  • Clear, solid color vases for DIY centerpieces– recently found three shelves full of these large, gem-toned babies at a major craft store marked down 60% to less than $10 each
  • Pomander balls of plain greenery for aisle decor or flower girls (again, adding your own embellishments would make an easy DIY project)
  • Plain greenery garland to decorate a wedding ceremony arch or head table (you could customize them by adding your own flowers, ribbons, or other embellishments)
  • Plain votive candle holders, hurricane lamps, and candelabras for reception table decor (not to mention the candles themselves)
  • Shoes, evening bags, and cocktail jewelry– with the trend of bold wedding shoes and accessories carrying forward to 2011 wedding trends, why not snag a pair of fancy holiday heels at discount prices? You’re not likely to change shoe sizes before your wedding so they’re a safe way-ahead-of-time buy. Same goes for things like handbags, necklaces, brooches, and other jewelry

I hope you’ll use these tips to take advantage of end-of-season sales, not only this season, but in the months to come as well. When spring turns to summer, and summer to fall, look for deals on decorative items and accessories for your upcoming wedding again! One last tip: If you’re going to shop the sales, make sure you don’t hesitate– it only takes a few days for seasonal sale items to become picked over. Since you’ll likely be purchasing multiples of some items (such as candle holders or vases), make sure you get while the gettin’s good!

Real Wedding Wednesdays: A Year in Review

By Perfect Wedding Guide ‘National Wedding Expert’, Susan Southerland

It hardly seems possible that we’re just a little over a week away from 2011! It has been a fun and inventive year for weddings, and I’ve greatly enjoyed featuring all of the happy couples who have shared their stories for the real weddings blog with us over the months. Today I wanted to recap some of my favorite elements that we’ve captured in 2010.

Special thanks go out to the talented photographers who have contributed their images to the real wedding blog today and throughout the year: Ginger Midgett Photography (www.gingermidgett.com), Dan Higgins Photography (www.danhigginsphotographer.com), Bill Peck Photography (www.billpeckphotography.com), Katie Meehan (www.katiemeehan.com), Nikki Rosa (www.nikkirosa.com), and Dave Brosha (http://davebrosha.com/). Without you, we wouldn’t have a blog to post!

Please read on for some of what I consider the highlights from our weddings this year. If you have your own favorite moments, I would love to hear about them!

One of the biggest trends I noticed this year was the use of accessories by brides wanting to put their personal stamps on their weddings without necessarily doing anything elaborate and expensive. Whether it was using accessories with vibrant color or just a lot of sparkle and shine, the success was in the details!

To expand on the trend of bringing out personality through details, I met many brides who had quite the surprise under their dresses on the big day…creative shoes! What a fun way to bring out your wedding colors and individuality.

Some couples went with some tried and true wedding favors this year, while others branched outside of the norm to incorporate seasonal and personal elements. I love the caramel apple idea!

We had the chance to see hundreds of wedding gowns this year, many of them having unique elements. Whether it was an unusual fabric, shorter length, or it included dazzling embellishments or coloring, we learned that there is really no such thing as a “traditional” wedding gown these days.

Did I mention the adorable and fun shoes?

With shows about cake design flourishing on television right now, brides had much higher expectations regarding this particular wedding element. We saw everything from traditional round and white tiered cakes to intricate designs in squares and octagons. And don’t get me started on the flavor combinations!

Brides this year wanted bright, colorful floral, largely steering away from pastels and whites. They wanted their bouquets to pop and sizzle on camera.

The use of color and interesting design also applied to floral other than the bride’s bouquet. From smaller, creative centerpieces to aisle decor, brides really brought out their wedding vision with their floral.

And, of course, the absolutely best part of these wedding stories is the people. We have met some incredible couples this year, and you all serve to remind me why I love this business so very much!

Thank you, readers and brides, for sharing all of your comments and insights on this year’s real weddings with me! Do you have a real wedding story you would like to share? If so, please email me at the address below with your experience and some photos. You might be the next bride featured on our wedding blog!

Wedding Receptions: 4 Cool Escort Card Ideas for Your Wedding Reception

By Wedding Blogger Heather S.

When planning a wedding reception with a large number of guests, seating arrangements are almost always your best option. Escort cards have come a long way since plain white rectangular cards with black calligraphy. Now brides are using unique finds that tie into the event or match the bride and groom’s personality to guide guests to their tables. Here are some cool ideas for custom cards:

  • Wine Country Wedding: Use old wine corks as a stand for individual place cards. Even if the reception isn’t in Napa it brings the feel of a vineyard to your event.

  • Hang the Cards: Create a backdrop in colors that coordinate with your wedding then string wire in taunt, vertical lines. Fold each place card length-wise and hang over the wire.

  • Sweet + Colorful: Use candy to create a sweet twist on a traditional escort card. Colorful lollipops work well when stuck in wrapped foam blocks.

  • Fresh Picked: Having an outdoor wedding? Use low vases filled with grass or moss and “plant” your guest’s place cards. At the reception guest can pick their own from the organic arrangements.
