Real Wedding Wednesdays: Kelly and Sean at the Celebration Hotel

Today’s real wedding blog post features a couple whose wedding I had the pleasure of coordinating earlier this month. Kelly and Sean’s remarkably beautiful and personalized wedding took place at the charming and elegant Celebration Hotel in downtown Celebration, Florida.

Although we battled the elements for both the rehearsal and the wedding, the end result was a perfect indoor event with a cocktail hour on the covered Lakeside Terrace. Special acknowledgments for their notable contributions go to Petals By Design (http://www.petals-bydesign.com/), Makeover Maven Heather Brinkman (http://www.makeover-maven.com/), Shutterbooth (http://shutterbooth.com/), Event Concepts, and Connie Duglin Linens (http://www.connieduglinlinen.com/). Also, a big thank you to Amy Alexander for these amazing images!

Please read on for this couple’s real wedding story as told by the groom, Sean:

Susan: How did you meet?
Sean: We met while working for Disney Event Group planning corporate events in Fall 2002, began dating in the Spring 2003, and the rest is history.

Susan: Tell us about the proposal.
Sean: During one of our regular visits to the “happiest place” on the West Coast, we were able to arrange for a private guided tour of Walt Disney’s personal family apartment above the Main Street Fire Department in the Disneyland Park. The Disney family apartment was built during the initial construction of the park in 1955 so that Walt could personally oversee every detail of his dream coming to life.

While Kelly was gazing out the front window in search of a certain animated duck, I prepped for the big moment with Dean’s (the Disney Tour Guide’s) assistance. When Kelly turned around from her character-gazing, I was on bended knee and asked if “she would be my Lillian” and yet another dream came true.

Susan: Why did you choose your particular wedding venue ?
Sean: The locale was ideal since we live in Celebration. Also, we wanted a location that offered other “stuff to do” such as dining and entertainment and the “boutique” hotel feel was more intimate than a larger national chain. And we wanted a location that was going to complement the feel our second location, San Francisco.

darden-bliznik62.jpg

Susan: What was it like for you on the morning of your wedding?
Sean: Aside from dealing with the weather drama, we were both filled with excitement and joy and wanted to spend time with our family and friends (some who had traveled quite a distance to be with us on our special day).

darden-bliznik41.jpg

Susan: What were your thoughts as you walked down the aisle?
Sean: Kelly was excited and very emotional and could not believe that it was (finally) happening. She was happy to be standing next to her father. Given all the planning that went into an anticipated outside wedding, we could not believe how perfect the ceremony was inside.

darden-bliznik31.jpg

Susan: What was the most memorable part of the day for you and Kelly?
Sean: Seeing both of the spaces (the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception) for the first time. In addition, hearing all of the feedback about how wonderful the space looked and the attention to every little detail. It was rewarding to see our year-long planning and thinking about every last detail was noticed and appreciated (but then again perhaps it is the event side of both of us).

A major moment would have been the fact that Paisley (our dog) was able to participate in the wedding and seeing her with her wedding best on for the first time.

Susan: Were there any particular elements of your wedding day that you considered unique or personal touches?
Sean: Most of it. Most of our wedding was not “off the shelf”, but rather custom designed and really reflected our unique personalities. All of the details stemmed from the color pattern of the groom’s tie and then really became creative with the infusion of Sarah Hearts’ (http://www.sarahhearts.com/) design of all of our paper goods. From the invitations to the table place cards to the escort cards to the mad hatter cake (designed by Party Flavors: http://www.orlandocustomcakes.com/)—the entire event was unique, custom, and reflective of our personalities and not traditional wedding expectations.

Susan: Based off of your experience, would you share some wedding planning advice for other brides and grooms who may still in the process?
Sean: First, do not settle when you hear “no” or “we can’t do that.” You need to plan in advance so that there is ample time to visit with multiple vendors, work for the best price, and have time to change vendors if needed.

Second, research, research, research. As the bride and groom, you need to do your homework, and rely on key respected professionals for references and suggestions that keep your vision in mind and work to surpass that vision, not create a vendor’s vision of how they would plan or create your wedding. For example, Susan suggested both Petals by Design (our florist who are absolutely wonderful) and Heather Brinkman, the bride’s makeup artist. Both were professional, listened, friendly, and worked within the bride and groom’s budget and personal expectations.

Thank you, Kelly ans Sean, for sharing the details of your wedding with all of us! Do you have a real wedding story you would like to share? If so, please email me at the address below with your experience and some photos. You might be the next bride featured in this wedding blog!

The Weekend Wedding Retreat Afternoon Session

I hope you enjoyed yesterday’s wedding blog post for Honeymoon Monday. Remember, if you had a particularly romantic honeymoon or if you think your home-town is an especially wonderful place for a honeymoon, please let me know. I would love to share it with my readers.

Today we’re featuring the afternoon session of The Weekend Wedding Retreat. I shared the morning session on Sunday. I think the photos really capture what a great time we had.

The afternoon sessions were really inspiring.

wwr-lunch.jpg
We had a delicious lunch at Hemmingways. Couples got to spend casual time chatting with all the vendors. Our DJ, Jeff Verschage and videographer Mark LeGrand helped one couple plan their honeymoon during the salad course!

We enjoyed a cake tasting for dessert with The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress’ award-winning pastry chef Steven Rujak. He gave us all wonderful information on the latest cake trends and things to look for when selecting wedding cake. Once lucky couple won the chance to design our wedding cake for The Weekend Wedding Retreat wedding reception.

When we returned to the education sessions, half of the group met with me to learn about “Exciting the Five Senses” at the wedding reception. We tasted champagne with different herbs, talked about adding textures and fragrances to the ceremony and reception and had a quick lesson on the importance of lighting. Then my group met with Frances Marron to learn about getting the most out of their wedding photos. (Come back to the wedding blog on Friday to see our couples put this lesson to use during their engagement photo session. The pictures are amazing!)

Afternoon sessions also included a site inspection of the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress and an invitation session with Gayle Steinhart

The other half of the group met with our florist, Vangie to create their own centerpieces. This workshop was extraordinary. Our brides and grooms had so much fun creating a one-of-a-kind centerpiece with Vangie’s guidance. Vangie was truly inspirational. Her designs were AMAZING!

I will post The Weekend Wedding Retreat wedding reception photos and engagement photos on Friday. You shouldn’t miss them. Some of the grooms make their runway model debut in gorgeous tuxedos provided by Absolutely Fitting!

Honeymoon Mondays: Banner Elk, North Carolina

With the last traces of cold weather rapidly dissipating, my thoughts are consumed by the fun that is to come from a summer filled with outdoor activities…hence today’s wedding blog post! When I think of fresh air, sunshine, and enjoying all of the splendor that nature has to offer, one unforgettable town nestled in the heart of High Country springs to mind–Banner Elk, NC. This quaint Blue Ridge Mountain getaway combines all of these elements in a romantic and captivating setting. It is perhaps best known for its world-class ski resorts, but if you’re not a snow bunny, have no fear! There is no shortage of fabulous accommodations, adventurous activities, and breathtaking scenery to fill your honeymoon with memories to last a lifetime!

Area accommodations include many charming and hospitable inns, luxury condos with spectacular mountain views, and authentic mountain cabin rentals (which range from rustic to luxurious). Once you have found a place to perch, you don’t have far to fly to begin your adventure- many places having hiking trails within walking distance! In fact, part of the world-famous Appalachian Trail runs directly through Banner Elk (as does the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway). The local trails are rated based on how strenuous they are, so there’s something for every couple’s skill level from strolling hand-in-hand to scaling the side of a mountain together.

For those who are looking for a thrill, you will find several local white-water rafting adventure tours available. Again, there is something for every skill set, so don’t be intimidated to give it a try! In addition to the rush of the rapids, this is also a great way to take in the beautiful mountain scenery. Another popular activity in the area is horseback trail-riding. These relaxing, typically 1-2 hour-long tours are guided by some of the most gracious and knowledgeable guides you’ll find anywhere. They will share everything from the history of the area, to information about the plants and wildlife along the trail, and even gladly take your picture looking like a real cowboy or cowgirl. Other unique activities in the area include gem mining (you may not strike it rich, but you’ll definitely find some priceless honeymoon souvenirs), bass fishing, blueberry picking, and spelunking (check out Linville Caverns).

Now gentlemen, you’ll want to listen up–Banner Elk boasts some shopping opportunities that will actually interest you! That’s right, you’ll be begging the Mrs. to take you to one of the local authentic General Stores which boasts something for you both! Whether you’re hankering for overalls, new boots, hardware, plants, movie rentals, glass-bottled soda, or homemade pastries and preserves, look no further than the Mast General Store, the Old Hampton Store, or Freddy’s General Mercantile. They ooze the rustic charm and slower paced simplicity for which the High Country is known! There are also many fine local boutiques, art galleries, and antique stores to peruse.

Antiques around every corner!

The area’s largest attraction is the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain State Park. Take nothing more than a picnic (perhaps including a bottle of wine from Banner Elk Winery), your camera, and hiking boots and prepare to experience a romantic, relaxing day! Another picturesque local park is the Moses Cone Mansion and Memorial Park, which includes an art and craft center housed in the Cone Mansion (featuring items such as pottery, jewelry, and woodworking hand crafted by local artisans). There are also stables on the property, so you can opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride around the miles of trails throughout the property.

Quite frankly, I could go on forever about the seemingly endless number of “can’t miss” things to see and do in Banner Elk, NC. You’ll just have to experience some of them for yourself and find out if their motto, “Life is just better here!” is really true! Check out www.bannerelk.org for more information on this distinctive and unforgettable honeymoon destination! Do you have other ideas of things to do in Banner Elk that I didn’t include in this wedding blog? What about another honeymoon destination that you would recommend sharing? I would love to hear from you with input on your preferred destination, and photos are definitely encouraged!
