A Few Easy Tips for Greening Your Wedding

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, this wedding blog is dedicated to doing our part to greening our planet.

I think we can all agree that weddings can be pretty excessive events. There is so much waste! From food that goes uneaten to the flowers we use for a few hours that we toss in the trash, there are many opportunities to add a few environmentally-friendly items to your wedding. Here are a few of my favorite eco-friendly tips.

  • Start planning your wedding from home. Before driving all over town, surf the Internet for vendors you like, make phone calls, exchange emails and narrow your options. Your at-home efforts will save you time, gas money, and will reduce nasty carbon emissions.
  • Have a plated meal rather than a buffet. When the chef can make precise portions there is less food waste.
  • Get an accurate guest count to your catering manager. This will also avoid over-preparation of food, which not only eliminates waste, it will also save you money.
  • Use live plants. I have to admit, I LOVE fresh cut flower centerpieces and I never want to see them go away, but if you are doing extensive decor for your ceremony and reception, flowering trees can be stunning (and you can plant them in your yard if they aren’t rentals)
  • Donate to a charity rather than give favors. I have many clients who have been giving money to their favorite charities in honor of their wedding guests. It makes them feel good to give something back to the community.

These are great tips! What about using recycled paper for wedding invitations? Or what are your thoughts about e-vites? Are those too impersonal?

  • Susan Southerland

Hi Sarah… recycled paper wedding invitations is a great idea! Some printers even offer vegetable ink rather than ink made with chemicals. I think that e-vites are a great idea for save-the-dates and even rehearsal dinner invitations, but I don't think that the world is quite ready to stop using the traditional wedding invitation yet.

I love the idea of using live plants and donating to charity in leau of favors! I agree that traditional invitations are probably here to stay, but maybe they could be printed on “plantable” paper? It is made from recycled paper and there are wildflower seeds in it, so you can literally stick it in the dirt after the wedding and beautiful wildflowers will grow.

I would have never thought about the buffet vs. plated dinner option as a way to prevent food waste… all things that should be considered! Happy Earth Day!
