This week’s Honeymoon Monday’s wedding blog post takes us to a destination where you can find both adventure and relaxation on land, by sea, or even underground! The sunny shores of Belize, Central America have a lot to offer beyond the jewel-toned waters and white sand beaches. Personally, I enjoy visiting places that truly offer something for everyone–especially for couples embarking on their first vacation as husband and wife–and Belize definitely hits the mark!
For those of you who are looking for a bit of unforgettable adventure, a jungle trek and cave tubing tour should do the trick! On the bus ride from town to the hiking and tubing site, your tour guide will start by educating you on the finer points of daily life, geography, and culture in Belize. Points of interest include the country’s ONE stoplight (technically, there are a total of four…but only one works) and the miles of banana and cashew tree farms.
Once you arrive at the cave-tubing facility, your journey to the river leads you through dry caves into the Belizean jungle. The guides are kind enough to stop periodically and tell you about the local wildlife (tarantulas) and vegetation (medicinal ferns and the native prized mahogany). Once you enter the waterway on your inner-tube, you will float lazily through the caves, observing stalactites and stalagmites, waterfalls, and cenotes (openings in the limestone that peek into the jungle above). You will often find that these same tour companies offer a treetop zip-line experience, in case you’re seeking even more thrills!
Now that we’ve explored the jungle and underground adventures that Belize has to offer, we can turn our attention to what’s at sea and, more importantly, what’s for dinner. The Belize Barrier Reef, one of the longest unbroken reefs in the world, is easily accessible from almost anywhere on the country’s coast. For snorkelers and divers alike, the reef promises a vibrant underwater paradise teeming with life.
You will find that the country’s delicious cuisine consists almost entirely of locally-grown and produced food. A typical lunch menu might include homemade, coconut-milk-cooked red beans and rice with jerk chicken. Now that’s what I call comfort food!
Belize claims to be “mother nature’s best kept secret” and, as the locals say, “You better Belize it!” For more information on how to plan your honeymoon in Belize, please visit www.travelbelize.org.
Do you have other ideas of things to do in Belize that I didn’t include in this wedding blog? What about another honeymoon destination that you would recommend sharing? I would love to hear from you with input on your preferred destination, and photos are definitely encouraged!
