Most of the time, when brides and grooms approach me about wedding fashion, they want advice about the wedding gown. Well, fashion for your wedding includes so much more. Today’s question is about shoes for the groom.

My fiancé wants his groomsmen to wear sneakers with their suits, but I think that’s totally tacky. How do we compromise? Angela, 33, New York City

Well Angela, non-traditional shoes (sneakers) have become a big fashion statement for grooms all over the country. In fact, the photo below shows groomsmen with sneakers that they were able to customize with colors and wording of their choice.

With that said, the look isn’t for everyone. If you really don’t want your groom and his wedding party to wear sneakers, perhaps you can let him get some funky socks.

When it comes to wedding planning, you have to decide which items are absolutely not negotiable. I assure you that sneakers aren’t tacky. If it is really important to your groom, you may want to let him go ahead with them. There are probably bigger issues on which you like to stand your ground.

Wedding blog readers, what do you think? Are sneakers tacky footwear for your groom and his groomsmen, or are they a great way for him to express his personality? As a photographer, I love it!! The rental shoes are horrible! They hurt everyone of my guys. My preference is Chuck Taylor's. They rock! The guys are comfortable. Your groomsmen get shoes they can take home and wear again. They're fun and funky. That said, I wouldn't do this if my wedding was evening and guests were wearing black tie. But if your wedding is fun, then if can fit.

Thank you for your comment, Kim. I must say, I know some grooms who could pull this look off even at the most formal events. My only complaint is that once again, the ladies still have to suffer pain for fashion. I consider men's rental shoes our revenge!

Thank you for posting this. My future mother-in-law is convinced that sneakers will look horrible in the pictures and doesn't want my fiance to wear them. Apparently she forgot that I will also be wearing sneakers with my dress (white Skechers).
