Wedding Flowers and Decor: Peacock Feathers
You have heard me talk and talk about the hot trend of peacock feathers and colors. Well my good friend Lana Pelham-Faulkner from Fairbanks Florist posted a peacock-themed wedding that she recently designed on her Facebook page. When I saw the photos, I knew I knew I had to share them with you. Enjoy!

Lana: The bride came with an open mind regarding her flowers, but she knew one thing that would be certain for her wedding, Peacock feathers would be used to accent everything! However, she liked the look of the feather without the fringe; she only wanted the amazing color and clean look of just the eye.

Lana: I took a design concept where I had layered individual eucalyptus leaves in rows to cover a surface, so I suggested a two sided fan covered with the peacock feather eyes. I would then use paphiopedilum orchids, fiddle fern and colored wire coming up out of the slit between the fans in an architectural row along the top creating a truly fun and funky look for her special day.

Lana: We implemented other types of orchids and flowers to pull the colors of lime green and dark blue for her Maid of Honor bouquet and throughout the remainder of the floral decor for her ceremony and reception.

Lana: I came up with the idea for a funky architectural cake top implementing the paphiopedilum orchids and fiddle ferns. She and I had a great collaboration and the end result was a one of a kind cake that really depicted the look and feel that the couple wanted to share with their guests on their wedding day.

They are colorful and fun and now they are a hot color and texture trend for 2010. The really great news is, they aren’t very expensive. See photos below for ideas to incorporate peacock feathers into your wedding decor.

This wedding gown made entirely of peacock feathers may be a bit of reach for most brides. It’s price tag is $1.5 million. Check it out at luxurylaunches.com.

You can use this palette to find linens, bridesmaids dresses, lighting gels and other accessories.

If you aren’t into the colors of the peacock feather, you can still incorporate the feminine, flowing shape in your design like this cake from cakethat.com.

CommentsCreating Your Wedding Look by Blending Colors
In response to my January 26th blog about color trends for 2009, Cassaundra wrote me the following question:
I AM THINKING OF ROYAL BLUE, ORANGE, AND GOLD FOR MY WEDDING COLORS. HOWEVER I AM NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO BLEND THEM. HELP!!
Well Cassaundra, I have a few thoughts on blending your colors. First, let’s take a look at them.
The gold and the orange blend seamlessly. You can use either color as your base and use the other color for accents. In other words, you can use a gold linen with orange and gold flowers. Or, you can use an orange linen with gold and orange flowers. The photo below is one of my favorite table arrangements.
Now, adding in the blue may be a bit more of a challenge. I am a graduate of the University of Florida. When I think of orange and blue, I think, “Go Gators!” but I am sure we can find a way.
What about having the girls wear royal blue dresses, or add some blue delphinium to your arrangements.
I think the splash of blue will take the orange and gold look from very formal to whimsical. If that suits your personality, go for it!
I am very visual, so I would suggest that when you are shopping that you bring large swatches of your colors and layer things on them. That will help you determine whether you are going to bold with any of the colors (most likely with the blue or the orange).
Good luck and happy shopping. Please send me photos of your wedding day. I would love to see how you decided to blend your colors.

CommentsWedding Party Flowers: Colorful, White, Monochromatic or Whimsical?
I was chatting with one of my brides this evening. She was trying to decide what types of flowers to put in her bouquet and what her bridesmaids should carry. She is getting all kinds of advice… “Bridesmaids shouldn’t carry white.” “Brides shouldn’t carry colorful bouquets.” “The bouquet you like is too busy.” “That bridesmaids’ bouquet will overpower your bouquet.” With all that advice, its no wonder my bride’s head was spinning.
Here is my opinion on the situation. A bride should carry whatever she likes. I have had brides carry very colorful bouquets and I have had them carry all white. Once the bride has her pick, she should choose bridesmaids bouquets that compliment the one she chose for herself. That doesn’t mean it needs to be the same size, shape, or color, but there should be some sort of a plan.
Below are some of my favorite bouquet photos. If you have some photos you would like to share, send me an email at susan.southerland@pwg.com.
CommentsBridesmaid and Flower Girl Dresses: What Colors Shall I Choose?
Wedding party dresses come in tons of colors and styles. The decision of what to choose can be a bit overwhelming. Kay, who is getting married in January, sent me this question.
Hello. I am in my mid forties & getting married (2nd time) I am wearing a long formal cream colored beaded dress. The wedding is in Jan at a church. Please give dress color ideas for the matron of honor, brides maid & flower girl (I had previously bought a white dress for flower girl) before I found mine. I live in the South so it is not usually very cold.
Thanks
Kay
Well, Kay (and for others of you who are struggling with this decision), here are my tips to choosing your bridal party’s colors.
- Start with your favorite color. You want your wedding to reflect your personality and style, so think about what colors you want to see on your wedding day.
- Consider the overall look of your wedding. Do you want bright, dramatic colors or monochromatic, formal colors. How will your favorite color fit the look?
- If you feel that some of your bridesmaids may not find the color flattering, use your trusty Just Marry! color wheel to find a shade variation of your color. You may find that going slightly lighter or darker than your favorite will make your girls happier.
- Let them be different. There is no rule that says your bridesmaids have to dress exactly alike. Encourage them to find dresses that are variations of your favorite color. Make sure they send you a photo for your approval.
- I like white dresses with a splash of color to match the rest of the wedding party for the flower girl. The color can come from an underlay or a sash.
- As for having your flower girl in white and you in ivory, that is a personal choice. I love the way ivory and white look together.
