Wedding Flowers and Decor: Peacock Feathers
You have heard me talk and talk about the hot trend of peacock feathers and colors. Well my good friend Lana Pelham-Faulkner from Fairbanks Florist posted a peacock-themed wedding that she recently designed on her Facebook page. When I saw the photos, I knew I knew I had to share them with you. Enjoy!

Lana: The bride came with an open mind regarding her flowers, but she knew one thing that would be certain for her wedding, Peacock feathers would be used to accent everything! However, she liked the look of the feather without the fringe; she only wanted the amazing color and clean look of just the eye.

Lana: I took a design concept where I had layered individual eucalyptus leaves in rows to cover a surface, so I suggested a two sided fan covered with the peacock feather eyes. I would then use paphiopedilum orchids, fiddle fern and colored wire coming up out of the slit between the fans in an architectural row along the top creating a truly fun and funky look for her special day.

Lana: We implemented other types of orchids and flowers to pull the colors of lime green and dark blue for her Maid of Honor bouquet and throughout the remainder of the floral decor for her ceremony and reception.

Lana: I came up with the idea for a funky architectural cake top implementing the paphiopedilum orchids and fiddle ferns. She and I had a great collaboration and the end result was a one of a kind cake that really depicted the look and feel that the couple wanted to share with their guests on their wedding day.

CommentsCan I Have a Chuppah at my Wedding Even Though I’m Not Jewish?
I had a bride pose an interesting question to me the other day. She loves the look of a Chuppah, but she isn’t Jewish. She wanted to know whether or not she could have one at her wedding.
Let’s start with the definition of a Chuppah. A Chuppah is a canopy under which a Jewish bride and groom get married. The Chuppah represents the home that the couple will build together. It is created by using four poles with fabric or a tallis (a religious prayer shawl) stretched across the top. Some of them are very ornate with flowers, others are just the tallis and four poles. The literal translation of Chuppah is canopy, so yes, regardless of whether or not you are Jewish, you may have a canopy at your wedding!
Here are some of my favorite Chuppahs:

CommentsGroom’s Boutonnieres That Will Knock Your Socks Off!
I can’t recall the last time I put an exclamation point in a headline. That should tell you how enthusiastic I am about these boutonnieres.
Many, many times throughout the years, I have walked up to a groom or groomsman to pin a boutonniere on their lapel only to be met with a wrinkled facial expression and a smart comment about not wanting to wear a corsage. A lot of men don’t like to wear flowers! I have always been in search of really cool, non-floral boutonnieres. A few weeks ago, I stumbled on a website that made me dance in my seat. Check these boutonnieres out.
I spoke with Erin Rosenow, the creative mind behind these gorgeous boutonnieres. She said that she was inspired to create these unusual boutonnieres because she felt that the boys and some girls too, didn’t want to always wear a rose or an orchid. “Weddings always seem so geared towards the bride and I thought something personal for the groom would be really sweet.” Rosenow said.
The price ranges for the boutonnieres vary between $30-$125 depending on the materials needed and Rosenow says she loves custom requests.
“That is pretty much what most of this business is all about,” Rosenow said. “I just finished a wedding where the groom loved this certain cartoon from Japan in the early 80’s so I had to track down something that would work for him. It was tough but in the end they were really happy.”

CommentsSuprising Trend for 2010 Weddings: Peackock Feathers
They are colorful and fun and now they are a hot color and texture trend for 2010. The really great news is, they aren’t very expensive. See photos below for ideas to incorporate peacock feathers into your wedding decor.

This wedding gown made entirely of peacock feathers may be a bit of reach for most brides. It’s price tag is $1.5 million. Check it out at luxurylaunches.com.

You can use this palette to find linens, bridesmaids dresses, lighting gels and other accessories.

If you aren’t into the colors of the peacock feather, you can still incorporate the feminine, flowing shape in your design like this cake from cakethat.com.

CommentsCreating Your Wedding Look by Blending Colors
In response to my January 26th blog about color trends for 2009, Cassaundra wrote me the following question:
I AM THINKING OF ROYAL BLUE, ORANGE, AND GOLD FOR MY WEDDING COLORS. HOWEVER I AM NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO BLEND THEM. HELP!!
Well Cassaundra, I have a few thoughts on blending your colors. First, let’s take a look at them.
The gold and the orange blend seamlessly. You can use either color as your base and use the other color for accents. In other words, you can use a gold linen with orange and gold flowers. Or, you can use an orange linen with gold and orange flowers. The photo below is one of my favorite table arrangements.
Now, adding in the blue may be a bit more of a challenge. I am a graduate of the University of Florida. When I think of orange and blue, I think, “Go Gators!” but I am sure we can find a way.
What about having the girls wear royal blue dresses, or add some blue delphinium to your arrangements.
I think the splash of blue will take the orange and gold look from very formal to whimsical. If that suits your personality, go for it!
I am very visual, so I would suggest that when you are shopping that you bring large swatches of your colors and layer things on them. That will help you determine whether you are going to bold with any of the colors (most likely with the blue or the orange).
Good luck and happy shopping. Please send me photos of your wedding day. I would love to see how you decided to blend your colors.
