From Storybook Romance to Fairytale Wedding: The Real Wedding of Jennifer and Michael

Today’s real wedding story features a sweet couple who met while she was working as a flight attendant and he was traveling home on her plane– Jenn and Mike turned a storybook romance into a fairytale wedding on the sandy beach terrace of the WDW Swan and Dolphin in July 2011. Our thanks to the happy couple for sharing their story and to photographer Ginger Midgett for the gorgeous photos.

Susan: Tell us about the proposal.
Jenn: The day that Mike chooses to propose to me started out to be “the worst day of my life”. Mike was out on a trip and I was having car issues that just had me really upset. By the time that Mike had landed and was really excited to go spend the day with me and propose, I was just content staying in bed all day sulking about my car. He called me and told me to get ready and we were going to go to the park for a walk. I really did not want to go but after realizing I was not going to get out of going to the park, I relented and went along. We had a nice little stroll around the park and decided to sit on a bench by the water and a little bridge. In the past Mike had written me a little “fairy tale books” about a princess who was looking for her prince, I had always asked him when I was going to get the next chapter of my book. Well that day was my lucky day! After we had sat on the bench for a bit, he asked if I wanted my last birthday present. So he pulls out another book, it was the sequel to my story. In this story is told about how the princess had moved to another land and the prince couldn’t live without her… In the end of the book the prince took the princess to a park and as they were sitting in a bench beside the water and a little bridge he asked the princess to be his wife so they could live happily ever after. Well when I got to that point in the story is when Mike pulled out my ring and proposed. So, needless to say the “worst day of my life” turned out to be one of the best days of my life.

Susan: Why did you choose your particular wedding location?
Jenn: We choose the Swan because it was a good mixture of the beach location that I was wanting and the Disney wedding that Mike was wanting.

Susan: What was the most memorable part of the day for you and your spouse?
Jenn: Our most memorable part of the day was when we first got to see each other! We got to do our first sighting by a little fountain in the garden. The look on his face when he turned around was a perfect!

Susan: Were there any particular elements of your wedding day that you considered unique or personal touches?
Jenn: The only unique part of our wedding is that we had the traditional wedding cake but we also had a plate of Oreo cookies. Mike’s nephew has a food allergy that made it so he couldn’t have any of the wedding cake. We had a plate of cookies out for him to have instead of the cake.

Susan: Based off of your experience, would you share some advice for other brides and grooms who may still be planning their weddings?
Jenn: Our biggest advice is to stay calm and just roll with what happens. Don’t stress over little details that aren’t going to be a big deal. A few days before our wedding we got an email that said the Swan was overbooked on the day of our wedding, so we just adjusted our plans for my hair and makeup to be done at our hotel room instead. Then the day before we received another message that one opened up and we were back on schedule to get ready at the Swan. I didn’t stress about the change in plans. It wasn’t going to affect any part of the wedding and it wasn’t anything to stress over. So just relax and don’t sweat the small stuff!!

A Blend of Simple and Elegant: The Real Wedding of Chelsea and Austin

Today’s real wedding has a southern flair with down-home elegance, and it was all brought together by this DIY couple. Coming to us from Maryville (just outside of Knoxville), Chelsea and Austin married in the beautiful Smithview Pavilion this past July. They used wonderful touches such as antique birdhouses, silverware tied with twine, burlap table runners, mason jars filled with birdseed and tea lights, and many other “country” details to bring about their wedding vision…complete with a Chinese lantern lighting ceremony!

The couple worked with Blooms & Blessings (www.bloomsandblessings.com) for their floral and other elements they didn’t do themselves. Many thanks to Kathleen Atkins of JOPHOTO (www.JoPhotoOnline.com) for sharing these beautiful images with us! Please read on for more details from the happy couple.

Susan: How did you and your spouse meet?
Chelsea: Austin and I met when I was 16 and he was 18. We met at church. I was new to the church and my friend introduced us. When we met, Austin acted really shy, said hello, and walked away. When I got home, I had a MySpace message asking me on a date.

Susan: Tell us about the proposal.
Chelsea: The proposal happened on my 20th birthday. He took me to my favorite restaurant. We were supposed to go walking by the river afterward (where he was going to propose), but we got lost along the way. So we went back to his apartment. He rushed out of the car, leaving me carrying everything (the leftovers, my gift, etc.). When I got to the door, there was a note. As I was reading the note, he got down and one knee and asked me to marry him. The proposal didn’t go as planned for Austin, but it was still perfect.

Susan: Why did you choose your particular wedding location?
Chelsea: I knew I wanted to have an outside, laid-back, casual, country wedding. I loved the field, the creek, and the landscape. I also loved the stone on the pavilion. I thought it would go great with my theme. The owners were so nice and laid-back. I knew they would be great to work with.

Susan: What was it like for you on the morning of your wedding?
Chelsea: I woke up to the doorbell ringing and flowers being delivered at my doorstep. They were from Austin with a little note (so that definitely started my day off well). Nothing could wipe the smile off my face. I was so ready to just get ready and see Austin.

Susan: What were your thoughts as you walked down the aisle?
Chelsea: I was crying and emotional the whole time! I was tearing up the whole way down the aisle. So I was thinking, “Try to hold back the tears and smile.”

Susan: What was the most memorable part of the day for you and your spouse?
Chelsea: We decided to do the “first look” before the wedding. That was the most special part. It was just Austin and I. When Austin told me how beautiful I looked and how I took his breath away, it was the best part of the whole wedding.

Susan: What was your biggest fear about the wedding day?
Chelsea: My biggest fear was the capacity for the reception. Never go by the rule “how ever many people you invite, expect half.” I was going by that rule and it didn’t work. We were 75 people over our original number. We had to order extra of everything last-minute, but we ended up having enough space for everyone.

Susan: What was one delightfully unexpected moment on the wedding day?
Chelsea: Someone requested a song for us that was an upbeat country song. Austin just bolted out in a hilarious dance (that wasn’t planned). Everyone there was cracking up.

Susan: Were there any particular elements of your wedding day that you considered unique or personal touches?
Chelsea: We had a sundae bar for dessert, which was a hit. I loved all the unique birdhouses everywhere. That gave the space a special touch.

Susan: Based off of your experience, would you share some advice for other brides and grooms who may still be planning their weddings?
Chelsea: Don’t stress over the little things (I know–easier said than done). Don’t worry about a specific flower or a candle placed on the wrong table. Just relax and have fun because when it’s over, it’s over, and all you will have are the memories. So make them count!
