DIY Wedding Ideas: The Real Wedding of Michelle and David

Michelle and David Stoker were married at the Winter Park Farmers’ Market in Winter Park, FL on Friday, May 13th, 2011. They’re not superstitious, but wanted to acknowledge their Friday-the-13th wedding date in a fun way. Michelle says, “Instead of a bubble [blowing] or rice [throwing] exit, we had our guests take a pinch of salt and throw it over their shoulders to wish us good luck. I would not suggest this! Some of our crazier guests took more than a pinch and threw it at us instead. David and I had salt in places that salt should not be. It was a funny exit, though!”

Read on to learn more about Michelle and David’s DIY real wedding touches!

Susan: How did you and your spouse meet?
Michelle: David and I first met as dorky pre-teens in 7th grade. A few years later, we started to become friends when I joined his church and youth group in the middle of 10th grade. Our constant communication grew into a deep friendship and eventually into dating, engagement, and marriage!

Susan: What was the most memorable part of the day for you and your spouse?
Michelle: Our first look. We chose to see each other before the wedding because we had a 7:00pm ceremony and we wanted to have all of our photos done before then. We are so happy that we did it. The first look was intimate, special, and emotional. We had a few minutes to ourselves before the day got too crazy!

Susan: Why did you choose your particular wedding location?
Michelle: We wanted to be close to home and at a location where we could hold both the ceremony and the reception. The Winter Park Farmers’ Market had a very rustic and unique feel. Even though it was an old train depot, we knew that we could make it beautiful for our special day.

Susan: What was one delightfully unexpected moment on the wedding day?
Michelle: I love to dance… love it! I was really hoping that our guests would let loose, enjoy the DJ, and dance (even though we didn’t have an actual dance floor, just a designated area). Fortunately, people of all ages and people from different areas of the country got up and put their dancing shoes on! It was so fun to see my a variety of people, such as my mother-in-law, sorority sisters, four-year-old niece, friends from out of state, and my new husband enjoying the night together!

Susan: Were there any particular elements of your wedding day that you considered unique or personal touches?
Michelle: David is an electrical engineer and a computer geek, so he loves to build electronics. One of his big projects for the wedding was to build a photo booth with my camera, his laptop and monitor, a big red button, and a shiny black box that we spray painted. We placed fun props next to the photo booth and let guests take hilarious pictures with the simple push of a button.

Susan: Based off of your experience, would you share some advice for other brides and grooms who may still be planning their weddings?
Michelle: Be realistic about what you can afford and what you ask of people. You do not want to start your marriage with debt from planning your wedding. I promise that you can make your wedding absolutely beautiful on a budget. It’s all about DIY!

Wedding Ceremony Ideas: Tying the Nautical Knot

Anchors aweigh! Every wedding should be a unique reflection of the couple itself; why not take that wedding to the sea? A wedding ceremony aboard a boat can create an unforgettable moment as you set sail with the horizon and the coast as your backdrops.

There are a number of different options available for saying your “I do’s” on the ocean blue.

You can enjoy an intimate setting and charter a sailboat for your wedding ceremony, or hop on a yacht that cruises the intercoastal. Many ships are designed just for hosting weddings and events and can fit up to 200 guests. Don’t be hesitant on boat ceremony pricing when putting together your wedding planning budget; many package prices are the same or even lower than the average land wedding!

If your ship is leaving the dock for a wedding ceremony and/or reception make sure to give guests a grace period before pulling the anchors up. You may want to include on your wedding invitations a boarding time and a separate ceremony time.

Is it a myth that the ship captain can marry perform the ceremony?
Myth busted! Actually, captains have never been able to perform marriages based just on their captain’s license. However, many captains on the vessels that offer wedding packages have taken the initiative to become recognized officiants.

“Having all our family and friends enjoy our ceremony as the ship set sail in the harbor was an intimate and magical experience for us. It seemed the further we got from the dock, the more people seemed to let loose and really enjoy themselves!” –Paula, recent bride who exchanged vows at sea

From Storybook Romance to Fairytale Wedding: The Real Wedding of Jennifer and Michael

Today’s real wedding story features a sweet couple who met while she was working as a flight attendant and he was traveling home on her plane– Jenn and Mike turned a storybook romance into a fairytale wedding on the sandy beach terrace of the WDW Swan and Dolphin in July 2011. Our thanks to the happy couple for sharing their story and to photographer Ginger Midgett for the gorgeous photos.

Susan: Tell us about the proposal.
Jenn: The day that Mike chooses to propose to me started out to be “the worst day of my life”. Mike was out on a trip and I was having car issues that just had me really upset. By the time that Mike had landed and was really excited to go spend the day with me and propose, I was just content staying in bed all day sulking about my car. He called me and told me to get ready and we were going to go to the park for a walk. I really did not want to go but after realizing I was not going to get out of going to the park, I relented and went along. We had a nice little stroll around the park and decided to sit on a bench by the water and a little bridge. In the past Mike had written me a little “fairy tale books” about a princess who was looking for her prince, I had always asked him when I was going to get the next chapter of my book. Well that day was my lucky day! After we had sat on the bench for a bit, he asked if I wanted my last birthday present. So he pulls out another book, it was the sequel to my story. In this story is told about how the princess had moved to another land and the prince couldn’t live without her… In the end of the book the prince took the princess to a park and as they were sitting in a bench beside the water and a little bridge he asked the princess to be his wife so they could live happily ever after. Well when I got to that point in the story is when Mike pulled out my ring and proposed. So, needless to say the “worst day of my life” turned out to be one of the best days of my life.

Susan: Why did you choose your particular wedding location?
Jenn: We choose the Swan because it was a good mixture of the beach location that I was wanting and the Disney wedding that Mike was wanting.

Susan: What was the most memorable part of the day for you and your spouse?
Jenn: Our most memorable part of the day was when we first got to see each other! We got to do our first sighting by a little fountain in the garden. The look on his face when he turned around was a perfect!

Susan: Were there any particular elements of your wedding day that you considered unique or personal touches?
Jenn: The only unique part of our wedding is that we had the traditional wedding cake but we also had a plate of Oreo cookies. Mike’s nephew has a food allergy that made it so he couldn’t have any of the wedding cake. We had a plate of cookies out for him to have instead of the cake.

Susan: Based off of your experience, would you share some advice for other brides and grooms who may still be planning their weddings?
Jenn: Our biggest advice is to stay calm and just roll with what happens. Don’t stress over little details that aren’t going to be a big deal. A few days before our wedding we got an email that said the Swan was overbooked on the day of our wedding, so we just adjusted our plans for my hair and makeup to be done at our hotel room instead. Then the day before we received another message that one opened up and we were back on schedule to get ready at the Swan. I didn’t stress about the change in plans. It wasn’t going to affect any part of the wedding and it wasn’t anything to stress over. So just relax and don’t sweat the small stuff!!
