A Checklist of Wedding Party Responsibilities

Wedding planning requires a lot more work than just looking pretty and partying at the reception! When your friend asks you to be in the wedding, know what that entails.

The wedding party takes on certain planning duties to support the couple. This can include everything from hosting pre-wedding events, to holding the hardware (wedding rings), to returning tuxedos to the rental shop.

Best Man's Responsibilities

He's not just there to plan the bachelor party! The best man serves as a "General of the Groomsmen" and performs official roles, such as formally witnessing the marriage.

DURING THE PLANNING PHASE:
  • Assists the groom with wedding and reception planning
  • Attends pre-wedding events and parties
  • Helps the groom choose, pick up, and return formal wear
  • Hosts the bachelor party
  • Serves as witness to the signing of the marriage license
RESPONSIBILITIES AT THE REHEARSAL AND CEREMONY:
  • Leads the groomsmen, making sure they arrive on time, dressed properly, and with all necessary items
  • Attends rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Helps the groom dress and prepare on the wedding day
  • Serves as the groom's personal attendant during the ceremony
  • Carries the bride's wedding ring
  • Distributes fees to officiant and other vendors
AT THE RECEPTION
  • Performs as master of ceremonies during the reception
  • Helps maid or matron of honor organize reception activities like the bouquet toss
  • Proposes the first toast to the newlyweds at the reception
  • Calls upon other guests to make toasts
  • Manages the departure from the reception
  • With maid or matron of honor, makes final farewells to the guests

Groomsmen's Responsibilities

Groomsmen are friends and family there to participate in the events leading up to your wedding and to stand with the couple in support on their special day.

  • Order and pay for their formal wear
  • Assist in preparations when asked
  • Attend pre-wedding parties and events
  • Seat guests for the ceremony
  • Escort bridesmaids during the ceremony
  • Serve as greeters at reception
  • Prepare vehicle for departure from the reception
Bridesmaid's Responsibilities

Bridesmaids are friends and family there to participate in the events leading up to your wedding and to stand with the couple in support on their special day.

  • Order and pay for their gowns and accessories
  • Assist in preparations when asked
  • Host and attend pre-wedding parties and events
  • Help decorate the ceremony and reception sites
  • Escort groomsmen during the ceremony
  • Serve as hostesses at reception

With every wedding, the bridal party has certain wedding planning responsibilities, but ultimately, the goal is to have fun during the process and remember why you said yes in the first place – to support your friend in their marriage!
