The gay rights community saw a big victory in California yesterday, as Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage, was deemed unconstitutional by the Ninth District Court, according to news channel KTXL-TV.
However, couples are not able to start
planning a wedding just yet. There is a stay on the marriages, and it can only be lifted by the Supreme Court when they make their ruling, the media outlet reports.
According to the Los Angeles Times, same-sex couples are still thrilled with the victory. West Hollywood residents 85-year-old Ivy Bottini and her partner Dottie Wine, thought about the possibility of getting married 30 years ago, and they didn't think they would truly see the day.
"I am very honored to have lived this long, to see this for people who want to get married," Bottini, an advocate for women's rights for half a century, told the news source. "For many people, it says: 'I am a human being. I am a good person and I love this person. And we deserve to be together.'"
