Knowing your Limousine Company In the recent years the limousine industry has created new laws that many people are unaware of that potentially can cause you to be riding in an unsafe vehicle. Knowing these rules and regulations will help you chose the right limousine company for your special event. Over the past couple of years the SUV stretches such as the Escalade???s and new infinity SUVs have become more popular along with the larger Limo Coach buses. Whenever renting a vehicle that accommodates 15 passengers or more there are certain rules that must be followed. All of the larger vehicles must be register with the United States department of transportation. With them now being registered with the USDOT they are required by law to have BUS plates (this is not an option). They must have a USDOT number along with a MC number posted on the outside of their vehicle. USDOT # (Required by all limousines 15 passenger or over. If vehicle does not have USDOT # the driver may be ticketed or worse, the vehicle may be towed on your special day.) U.S Federal Motor Carrier Number (All vehicles need this to travel out of state. If vehicle does not have a U.S Federal Motor Carrier Number the driver may be ticketed or worse, the vehicle may be towed on your special day.) A company should also have a standard random drug testing policy. This is another requirement by the USDOT. Insurance is another big issue in the industry. Insurance is one of the biggest expenses a limousine company must carry. Certain size vehicles must carry certain insurance requirements. Example 1.5 Million Dollar Liability Insurance for 14 Passengers or less 5 Million Dollars for over 14 Passengers As for the smaller stretches and smaller SUVs they also have to be regulated by an office of the law also. This is what we call the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. New York has their own as well as Nassau and Westchester County. They must have a license plate on it that says TLC from their local Municipality. Also not only do the limousine companies have rules to comply with but the drivers also must comply with rules of their own. All drivers that are handling a vehicle with 15 or more passengers in it must have a valid Commercial Drivers License with a passenger Endorsement. The drivers of the smaller vehicles must carry a valid NYC TLC License. Westchester also issues valid TLC license of their own. When reserving your limousine company you should always make sure your dealing with the company itself and not a broker. Make sure the company owns the vehicles and that there not going to outsource your contract to make middle mans markup. Inspect the car make sure it is what you are reserving at the time of signing your contract. If a company Sub Contracts its work out this can compromise your safety as well as the quality of service you will receive. Here at Double Diamond Limousines we practice the highest level of service. All of chauffeurs are required to take a pre screening drug test as well a safety course through our establishment. We are registered with all of the government agencies that govern the limousine industry as well as being listed on Dunn and brad Street. You will find us listed in your local prom and wedding magazine, and we were recently voted as best transportation 2007 2008 and 2009 by brides in the wedding Magazine The Knot. If you or anyone may have any questions regarding any of regulations with the limousine industry you may contact me in the office and I will be more than happy to explain any of the rules that must be followed by a transportation company. Sincerely Thomas Aellis President Double Diamond Limousines
