5 Questions You Should Ask Your Wedding Cake Designer

questions to ask the cake designer, wedding cakesWedding cakes have become more than a simple wedding tradition; they’re now more like a major design element for your wedding reception. Once you decide on the perfect cake design, you need to hire someone to implement it. Here are five questions you need to ask before you sign the contract:

1. How many cakes do you make each day? If the cake designer does multiple cakes in a day, you want to make sure there is plenty of time and staff to properly take care of yours.
2. How do you price your cakes? Most bakers charge by the slice (per person), but there may be additional fees for special designs, cake stand rentals, and/or different frosting, fillings, or embellishments. Don’t forget to ask about delivery fees, too.
3. Can you provide references? You’ll want to check reviews and testimonials (about taste as well as professionalism). You should also confirm that the vendor is licensed and insured. The last thing you want is to have a cake emergency on the wedding day and not have the vendor step in to resolve it!
4. Will you preserve the top tier of the cake? Some cake designers prefer to make a special fresh cake for your one-year anniversary as opposed to you eating year-old frozen cake. Discuss your preference with the designer to make sure you’re on the same page.
5. How far in advance do we need to make our decisions? You’ll want to know all of the details on the business side of booking your wedding cake, such as when payments are due, when you have to give a final guest count, and when you have to make all of your flavor and design decisions.

If you can schedule a tasting with your cake baker, that’s one of the best ways to make sure you’ll be happy with the final product. Leave a comment if you have any questions about choosing your wedding vendors.
