The “Irish Elegance” styled wedding was organized by the talented Melanie L. McCullough Photography. The outdoor setting was HollyOaks Plantation nestled among the heirloom camellia, azalea gardens and gorgeous live oaks along the Grove River in Beautiful Savannah, Georgia.

Inspiration came from Melanie’s love of Ireland that was sparked from her visit to the beautiful Green Isle in 2017. Intertwining Irish wedding traditions with the elegance of a gorgeous outdoor coastal Georgia wedding.

Thanks to Bleubelle Bridal in Savannah, GA Melanie found a stunning floral bridal gown with a blue underlay designed by Kate McDonald that brought this Irish tradition into the 21st century.

Inspiration came from Melanie’s love of Ireland that was sparked from her visit to the beautiful Green Isle in 2017. Intertwining Irish wedding traditions with the elegance of a southern wedding in gorgeous outdoor setting.

“May you be in heaven a full half hour before the devil knows you’re dead.”

Melanie wanted to  incorporate authentic Irish details into this wedding so she reached out to Saints and Shamrocks in Savannah, GA since they carry an abundance of merchandise from Ireland. The Irish love their whiskey and the day would not be complete without a whiskey bar filled with Irish Whiskey and toasting.

Did you know that a traditional Irish bride wore a blue wedding dress rather than white as a symbol of purity in a time before white became the universal symbol for purity.

The bride had her lucky horseshoe on her bouquet and the ceremony had the Irish wedding tradition of handfasting.

A handfasting ceremony has its roots in ancient Celtic tradition, symbolizing the binding together of two people and is also where the saying “Tie The Knot” comes from! Today this custom has moved away from alternative ceremonies and is often used in more traditional and mainstream weddings. You’ll see it used in both secular as well as religious wedding ceremonies.

During the ceremony, the officiant begins by explaining the ritual and what it means to the couple. This statement often includes the notion of the couple binding their lives together and the union of their hopes and desires. The officiant then invites the couple to join hands, which symbolizes their free will to enter into the marriage. Many opt to cross hands, taking their fiancé’s right hand in their right hand and vice versa.

“Always remember to forget the things that made you sad. But never forget to remember the things that made you glad.”

Some Irish Wedding Traditions youmight like to incorporate into your own wedding day:

  • Incorporate Irish music with Uilleann Pipes
  • Kilts & Bagpipes
  • Carry a Lace Handkerchief
  • Have Sixpence in your Shoe
  • Have a Good Luck Horseshoe
  • Wedding rings that incorporate Irish Symbolism, a claddagh ring
  • Incorporate the traditional Irish Blessing
  • Honey wine before the honeymoon
  • Traditional Irish Wedding Cake

“May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future.”

“May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. “
