Q and A: Ceremony: We're Not Having a Religious Ceremony

Q: My fiance’s family is very religious, but we have chosen not to have a religious wedding ceremony. I don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with my new family, but this is very important to us. How (and when) should we discuss our decision with his parents?

A: I think that sensitive subjects should be dealt with immediately. Explain to his parents that you respect their beliefs and do not want to offend them, but you have decided to do a non-religious ceremony. It may be difficult for them to accept at first, but be patient, they should come around eventually.
