Wedding Fitness: Weight Loss Misconceptions and Solutions
The day of your wedding is the rated by most as the single most important day for you to look and feel your best. Here, we'll discuss the four biggest weight loss traps that keep you from shedding pounds, and give solutions to help you meet your wedding diet goals for your big day.
1. Not consuming enough calories and protein. Many people think that ‘less is more’ when it comes to their weight loss. The key to losing weight loss is calorie and protein intake. If we don’t take in enough calories and protein our body thinks it is starving and that something is seriously wrong. This causes our body to slow down our metabolism to help us conserve energy. This of course causes us to gain weight and be more tired—a no-no for the wedding day.
The solution: Consult a wellness and nutrition expert to advise you on the right amount of calories for you to consume daily on your wedding diet. Don’t rely on the generic guidelines from an online or magazine article. All bodies are different—different metabolisms, different activity levels—therefore, requiring different caloric intakes.
2. Not eating often enough. We all live crazy, hectic lives—especially when running around with wedding planning. As we get busier, we eat less often. This throws our body into survival mode, creating a slower metabolism leading to increased fat storing and less energy by our bodies trying to conserve energy.
The solution: Eat three meals and two snacks a day so that you are eating every 3-4 hours while on your wedding diet. You’ll be amazed that by eating more you’re less hungry and losing weight. Our first meal should be within 30-45 minutes of waking up to prevent our bodies from going into survival mode.
3. Not taking in enough nutrients while on the wedding diet. Many of us think that all foods are created equal. Unfortunately this is not true. Fruits and veggies don’t have the nutrition in them that they should. Fresh produce is picked early so that it can ripen over the days, weeks, or even months before it makes it to the stores. Once the fruit or vegetable is picked, the nutrition to it stops, so they can have as little as 15-20% of the nutrition they should have in them.
The solution: Forgo “quick foods.” Our body determines if we are starving or not, simply by the amount of calories we are consuming and the amount of nutrition we are giving it. Most of the quick foods we rely on are very high in calories and carbohydrates, yet very low in nutrition. Protein, although very important to effective wedding diet weight loss and on-going fat burning, is not the most convenient food to find when we are on the go. Before you spend $20-30 on a canister of protein powder, make sure it is loaded with vitamins and minerals that we need daily (did you know we need 114 nutrients daily?). Look carefully at the label (amino acids are NOT vitamins). Just like anything else, you usually get what you pay for.
4. Following Fad Wedding Diet. Many times people get frustrated because they gain all of the weight they lost plus more when they lose weight with one of those ‘fad diets’. This is because most of them cause us to lose out on even more nutrition while on the diet, throwing our bodies even farther into survival mode so when we go back to your old eating habits, our body starts to store these extra calories as even more fat.
The solution: The key is to lose weight on your wedding diet while at the same time giving our body all the nutrition (protein, vitamins and minerals) it needs. So eat the best you can, adding vitamin, mineral and protein when needed.
The great news is there is an easy solution to you looking and feeling your best for your big wedding day! Just keep in mind, all four of these areas must be done to lose the weight, have more energy and keep it off. By simple things, you will lose weight, feel healthier and look better on your wedding day!
